Week 19:
October 5, 2025 - Omaha, Nebraska
Week 19 of U.N.T.A.M.E.D: 20 Weeks of Summer brought together something rare, beautiful, and powerful a mosaic of communities uniting for healing, reflection, and solidarity.
Hosted by U.N.T.A.M.E.D, this week’s focus on Community Engagement drew together leaders, families, and cultural representatives from the Somali, Ghanaian, Sudanese, and Black American communities, with PILLAR INC honored to participate as an invited guest organization as previous weeks.
It was a day filled with conversation, laughter, remembrance, and the kind of fellowship that reminds us why community still matters especially in times that test our collective strength.
A Feast of Cultures and Connection
The event was a true cultural celebration. Tables overflowed with traditional Somali dishes fragrant rice, spiced sauces, sambusa's, and mandazi lovingly prepared by elders from the Somali community. PILLAR INC members contributed drinks, rice dishes, sauces, and crispy Viazi (fried battered potatoes) that quickly disappeared as families shared meals together.
The Ghanaian community brought jollof rice, while our African/Black American brothers and sisters shared soulful comfort food that felt like home to everyone present. Together, these foods told a story of resilience a shared heritage expressed through taste and tradition.
Laughter echoed through the air as kids played games, families mingled, and elders shared wisdom passed down through generations.
Throughout the day, music served as the heartbeat of the event. Somali beats met Sudanese rhythms, Ghanaian drums called out to African American soul music a symphony of sound and spirit that transcended borders.
But beyond the music, there were real conversations the kind our communities often need but rarely make time for. Participants talked openly about the challenges facing minority and immigrant communities in Omaha, from youth opportunities to inter-community understanding.
One of the most powerful takeaways from these dialogues was a shared realization: the so-called “diaspora wars” tensions between African immigrants and African Americans are myths sustained by misunderstanding, not truth.
At this gathering, that myth was shattered. People from multiple African nations and African American families stood side by side, shared meals, played together, and spoke about their experiences. There was no division only shared humanity and hope.
“Together, we are unstoppable,” said Anisa Aden, President of PILLAR INC, during her remarks.“We need to forge bonds, not build barriers. We have to bridge the disconnect between our communities, because unity is how we protect our youth, our women, and our future.”
Honoring Lives Lost and Restoring Trust
The event also carried a solemn purpose to honor lives unjustly taken too soon. The mother and mother-in-law of Janidi Ibrahim were in attendance, serving as living reminders of both pain and perseverance. Their presence brought the crowd to silence a collective moment of reflection and resolve.
It was a moment that tied everyone together in compassion. In grief, there was solidarity. In remembrance, there was strength.
As an organization rooted in faith, healing, and empowerment, PILLAR INC’s presence at the event was about listening, learning, and standing shoulder to shoulder with fellow community builders.
The event reflected everything PILLAR stands for elevating voices, bridging generations, and restoring hope while also reminding us that our shared struggles as people of African descent are best overcome through collaboration, not separation.
From the elders who brought food, to the youth who danced and laughed, to the mothers who spoke of their dreams for the next generation every detail of the evening embodied the spirit of unity Omaha needs more of.
The gathering reaffirmed something powerful: our communities are not competitors we are complements to one another. Together, African and African American communities hold the power to redefine representation, reimagine leadership, and rebuild trust where division once lived.
As the music quieted and the night me to a close, there was a collective sense that this was not the end, but the beginning the start of a deeper movement toward understanding and cooperation.
