The weight of silence around mental health and suicide in African communities is a profound, often unspoken, burden. On September 3rd, our organization, PILLAR INC, was honored to participate in a powerful dialogue at the International Mental Health Wellness event, an annual gathering recently recognized by the Mayor of Omaha, in partnership with the FEMIS Heart Foundation.
It was a privilege to represent the faith sector, joining community and faith leaders on a panel dedicated to confronting the deep-seated stigma that prevents many from seeking help. The conversations were raw, honest, and necessary.
A central, urgent theme emerged: the disconnect between parent and child. We discussed the heartbreaking reality of our youth living "two lives": the one presented at home and the one navigated in the outside world, often driven by intense peer pressure or a simple lack of understanding from their elders.
This duality creates a dangerous vacuum. Our parents, who possess so much wisdom and strength, need to be fully engaged and better equipped to understand the complex mental and emotional landscapes their children are traversing. A bridge of lifelong learning and open communication must be built to close this gap.
The conversation reached its most poignant moment when our President, Anisa, shared her own journey. With incredible courage, she spoke openly about her past multiple suicide attempts due to depression. Her struggle was rooted in a lack of understanding of what was happening to her, where to turn, and who to confide in.
Her story is a powerful, heart-rending example of how easily a path could have ended tragically when knowledge and access were absent. Her resilience now fuels our organization's commitment to providing the Mental Health & Emotional Resilience and Academic Empowerment services that could have saved her younger self.
The collective voice of the panel was clear: we need more of these gatherings. We need safe spaces where vulnerability isn't judged as weakness but seen as the first step toward healing and resilience.
We left the event with an overwhelming sense of hope, bolstered by the Mayor’s commitment to making this vital conversation an annual cornerstone in Omaha. This recognition is not just an acknowledgment of an event; it's a mandate for action-a promise to continue dismantling stigma and building a culture where mental wellness is seen as essential to thriving.
To the families and individuals we serve, know that PILLAR INC is dedicated to providing the resources that foster dignity, knowledge, and resilience. The silence is broken, and the work has just begun. We look forward to seeing this annual event grow and inspire more communities to prioritize mental health.
